An ingrown nails, or onychocryptosis, is a condition that manifests itself in the top corners of a nail. In most cases, it does not cause any serious consequences. This condition is characterized by a nail that digs and pushes into the skin around it. When that happens, the thicker and tougher skin around the nail reddens and swells, causing inflammation and, if not treated promptly, an infection. The big toe nail is the most subject ingrown nails. Common causes include wearing very tight shoes or cutting the nail too short with deep rounded edges. Activities that cause repeated trauma to the feet, such as wearing high heels or running, can also lead to ingrown nails.

Most ingrown nails do not require medical treatment. They can be improved with preventive treatments. Such treatments include not cutting the edges of the nails, taking adequate care of the feet, and wearing shoes with the right fit. Medical treatments are more common for impacted nails. In these cases, the suggested treatment is generally the use of a chlorhexidine-based antiseptic solution to pull the ingrown nail out of the skin. Even though this treatment is not given to everyone, it can lead to allergic reactions and skin or mucosa irritations (if contact occurs). Other interventions include surgery for recurring ingrown nails or serious infections.
