What are the different types of eczema?
Contact dermatitis is a type of eczema that is triggered by skin contact with foaming products, harsh soaps, sweat, saliva, etc.
People can experience allergic or irratiave (non-allergic) contact dermatitis; this means that eczema appears a few hours after a simple contact with an irritating substance.
Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by patches of greasy skin covered by yellow scales or crust. It often appears on the scalp.
Seborrheic dermatitis causes significant dandruff problems with adults. This type of dermatitis can also spread to the face, ears and chest.
What are the risk factors?
While eczema is a oftentimes a genetic disease; however, several factors can aggravate the condition:
Skin contact with different products (wool and synthetic fibers, soaps and detergents, perfume, cosmetics, sand, cigarette smoke, etc.)
Allergens from food, plants, animals or the air
Frequently wetting and drying skin
Emotional factors, such as anxiety, conflicts and stress
Skin infections, particularly fungal infections (ex.: athlete’s foot)
How can I treat eczema?
Today, there is no known treatment that can cure eczema. Treatments can help reduce inflammation and the discomfort. In many cases, corticosteroid products are prescribed; however, they lose their effectiveness and thin the skin over time. Moreover, oral corticosteroids can cause other side effects, such as the loss of minerals in bones.
